this week i’m finishing up all the picks for the bahamas project i’ve been working on. it’s a family home, right on the beach, new construction – did i mention on an island? this was uncharted territory for me – so much to learn. apparently, everything rusts, things mold, fabrics grow, hurricanes blow, taxes are charged, things have to be shipped on oceans and flown on tiny planes. it’s hot. and wet. lenny kravitz lives down the street and has his own hardware line? people have pigs as pets, yesterday was ‘equalization’ day on the island, so everyone takes off and i can’t furnish this house with fancy expensive custom things because – well, all the aforementioned issues.
so, to solve this puzzle of many pieces, we found some real steals and deals – i am mostly furnishing this lovely love shack with big box buys that we scored during holiday sales and can easily ship right down to miami, and over to nassau. i even surprised myself with this one – with all the limitations of the island, plus a very short execution time (they’re building the house so fast, who knew!), i think i found some pretty rad pieces that are going to come together for a laid-back coastal cottage feel with island vibez to spare.
and all of this is click and buy, crazy right?
– i’ve always wanted to use these aerin lauder sconces – i’m going with a pair flanking the entry so when you walk in, you know things are about to be classy up in hur.
– remember when i went scouting for kondo at ikea in the summer? this couch was the very first thing i saw when i walked in, and i knew instantly it was the one for this project. it’s super deep, the fabric is nice and thick and feels fancy, the lines are great, it’s a little smaller than a full sofa, and it’s slipcovered. praise be the blessed fruit! and, ahem, it’s $700. we bought two of them.
– i did all the headboards from OKL – on sale, Black Friday stylez, $300 each. the house has an overall color palette of light blues, navy and gray, so i went with solids in interesting shapes for each bedroom. each room gets a vintage kilim, one funky pillow and a pair of cool sconces. done.
– baskets and bowls are the easiest dang art you can do. sending down a collection to use for styling, wall installations, and really any place i see that lacks a basket – i’ll put one there.
– pillows errwhere from my friend amira’s company, archive
– aerin lauder and i will probably be bffs after this since i’m basically just supplying her with instagram content for days. a pair of coral mirrors for above the master bathroom vanity
– peter dunham pillows on etsy, whut whut. i mean, if you can’t beat em, join em. (order your fancy pillows on etsy, or pay a workroom $29385 for same deal and have 4 yards leftover for, a piano bench cushion?) ((ohmygawd, I’ll totally use it for that one day!)) (((you won’t)))
– don’t forget about the youths — pb teen and cratekids (formerly land of nod) have all the themed items, including this rope floor lamp. flanking the ikea sofa with a pair and feeling very youthful about it.
– serena & lily wrote the catalog on resort rooms, so we’d be remiss to not take a cue from them. going with a pair of their costa chairs in the living room for some organic overtures.
– under $200 nightstands are perfect for kid’s rooms upstairs. OKL – here’s a pair, there’s a pair, thanks, we’re all done here.
– the aim is to create a magical moment in the bedroom with a 4 poster bed draped with indian hand-blocked curtain panels on all sides (that I’m going to Jaipur to buy next month, whoot!) wood does much better than metal on the island, so we went with a OKL style that looks like we splurged, but it was in fact, a dealeroo too.
– i found an artisan in morocco who’s making these kooky mirrors for us (it’s like my too short hair in a top-knot, le sigh), and he’s also making us pendants that look like they have bangs. i’m into it.
– round wood mirrors from cb2 going in the guest bathroom over the vessel sinks
– gorgeous paule marrot artwork, framed in lucite – going in the master bedroom for a major moment – HUGE, it’s 44″ x 56″!
– what’s up pottery barn nightstands, looking all simple and chic like tom schreerer just dropped them by from the late 80s. they’re actually going in the master bedroom mix, as a calm interlude to all the 3-ring curtain circuses i’m creating
– a little chippendale charm – two OKL chairs for a sitting area in the master bedroom
– i love this lamp so much from cb2. add it to any room that’s getting too fussy and things will simmer down.
– side tables from pier 1 i’m using a nightstands in the guest suite. look at you, forgetting about pier 1. they have some things, still, in 2019
– a happy round jute rug will live in the entry way
– and this dhurrie goes in the living room, with the ikea twins and serena seating
– i did go with one patterned headboard in the guest room. a little indigo feel appropriate for island vibez.
– very cute (and perfectly appropriate) pendant lamps my client found and i happily found a home for them in a long hallway leading to the master bath suite.
– a long-standing fave of mine, the shroom coffee table from cb2. perfect for the living room – it’s huge, 45″, indestructible, and modern enough to keep my mix from looking sloppy.
– in a show of deep restraint, i agreed with the home-owners that each bed would get just one (maybeeeee two?) pillows. this lumbar is a perfect punctuation to a pretty headboard, and a well-dressed white linen bed.
– a blue mosaic mirror in the powder room is going to look punchy paired with concrete floors, a teak cabinet, and an adjoining outdoor shower
– a really good-looking dresser scored in the serena and lily tent sale for the guest-suite’s storage solution
– using this pair of glass lamps in the master because they’re fillable! and how fun will that be to show their growing collection of found shells, seagrass and pieces of coral
and finally, 28 – caroline hurley fabric for schumacher. making a few roman shades with this for the kitchen – i couldn’t be more stoked i finally get to use this fave fabric for a project.
