Flings

Flings / May 2, 2019

watching

we saw the newest interpretation of Oklahoma on broadway last week, and it was absolutely fantastic.  I was grinning ear to ear the entire time, just really thrilled to be a human, and happy that humans are creating such interesting, provocative, weird, wonderful things.  if you get the chance to see it in nyc, i highly suggest splurging for the floor seats - you are part of the show, and first in line when the chili that's been cooking on your picnic table is served at intermission =)

wearing

the weather was whackadoo in nyc last week.  we got in on easter, and it was delightful - 70 and sunny.  we ate 4 meals, drank 8 drinks, saw many pups and 1 Ukrainian supermodel.  after a few days of the springiest of springtime, there was an epic thunderstorm (storms in the city give me feels) and then it was raining and gross, and mostly chilly.  suffice to say, i had to wear many outfit hats for the tumultuous temps.  things worth mentioning are my new heart shirt from urban outfitters worn under my fave tartan blazer, the sock booties i've been raving about for months (this outfit with sneaks during the day, and boots for a nighttime lewk), my new panda purse, stan smith sneaks: the perfect city shoe, and a pretty plaid coat with a big ole bow that i found for a steal.

wanting

i got home to raleigh with the worst case of the wants.  i walked around the kondo just desirous of things - tile for the kitchen, an expensive-ass tray for my bedside table, roman shades for the living room, a rug to layer over the sisal in the bedroom, new lamps, convex mirrors, and now these fancy af shams.  there are zero percentages of me that can afford a pair of porthault tigre shams, but every fiber of my being is saying 'this is me now'.

eating

i feel way overdue for a dedicated nyc post - because i've finally got some new-to-me spots to share.  i'm working on one for next week detailing my latest jams, but by far the most impactful has been Lucien.  it's a french bistro on our block, and also my new happy spot.  we brunched there two Sundays in a row (get the table in the front, by the window, and then get the french fries).  there's something about the light in Lucien - crisp and natural and so bright during the day, and a toned-down sexy-time peach colored light reflecting off the walls at night.  we had the best dinner one night with two friends - an epic four hours, several bottles of wine, lobster spaghetti and frite frite frites.  it's always packed (with beautiful youths and we've spotted a celeb or two), so make a reservation if you can!

decorating

we're putting the finishing touches on the selections for the Bahamas - and gearing up for a final install the first of June.  last picks include some outdoor furniture (it's always on sale this month) and fun printed pillows.  it's that time of year that we're all thinking about zhushing the porch or patio up a bit, so you'll appreciate this Etsy seller i found who makes a great selection of very chic quadrille, schumacher and scalamandre pillows

entertaining

i hosted a few little get-togethers at the kondo before i left for nyc, so it was time to restock the bar a bit.  admittedly everything here was chosen because the labels appealed to me, but auspiciously so, the mezcal turned out to be as tasty as the was packaging was pretty.  also i finally professionally framed my emoji subway map art like a big girl, and i'm pretty stoked about how the red turned out.  i happened to run into the artist last week on the street in soho, and showed him how they looked hanging in the kitchen.  he was pretty stoked as well.

installing

feeling pleased with how this sweet nursery is coming together.  I've been wanting to use caroline z hurley's joshua tree fabric for ages, and this was the perfect spot for it.  we painted the blue on the wall about 4' up - and i love how it looks on the trim, the windows and the doors.  if you're gonna do a thing, do it.

Oh, you are in my hood! So many good places to try and I am sure you have a ton of suggestions already. Cafe Mogador is my favorite place for steak frites – if you are into the frites : ) – and it is also a good cafe spot for an afternoon mezze platter with a glass of wine.

There are also a ton of neighborhood gardens in the East Village – maybe not what you came to NYC for : ) But they can be a great place to relax with a coffee or some take out. Definitely look for them or I’m also happy to show you some next time you’re in town… https://www.instagram.com/p/BiPSCR8gsVD/

The oak paneling was detailed with black molding, a reference to the hand-painted ceiling in the living room.
