good morning young people. I report to you live from my corner table at the ludlow house, where I’m posted up for the next 6 hours, writing this blog post, eating eggs my way, watching youth and those who look youthful do their internet jobs and working on a myriad of design projects that I have too many ideas for and need to devise some sort of filtering funnel to pick the ideas I want to try.
this post shall be comprised of updates from my stay in nyc in august. notable events during this time period were: a recreational visit from Asher, a work jaunst with Anna and Dustin including buying missions to shoppe object and NYNOW, and a few to more than a few dinners out with fronds.
let’s commence. (grab a latte, this is a doozy)
first off, the gift show(s). I do this begrudgingly twice a year because finders gotta find, and I’m in the business of adding new things to the furbish edit at a feverish pace. I don’t source much from shows, but I do like to augment if I can find just the right item. typically at the NYNOW gift show, i come up short and spent. you hoof it around the javits center, up a row down a row (like the line at the DMV but imagine never ending) for hours and you find about 3.2 items of interest. like digging for a lost chip you’ve dropped in the car and you come up with barely a crumb (most likely I eat the crumb). I have a slew of questions I ask of new product – it’s not quite a swipe right situation. Will I actually make money on you? Can I ship you? I mean, can I ship you easily, without you breaking and costing a billion? do you help someone tell their story? do you fit with my brand? do I want you? do you stand out in a room? are you pretty in a picture? do you make me feel like I’m more interesting?
it’s a lot, and I don’t find much. but there’s a new kid in town (actually, toddler, it’s their third year) : shoppe object – a gathering of the coolest of cool from NYNOW. aesthetic movement, a branding company out of Brooklyn, is the ringmaster over at the SO show, and they plucked the best lifestyle brands off and corralled them all in one new spot. and it’s really good. all the hipness happens over on the east side pier now. so that’s less soul-crushing, for me.
ok – let’s do it. reformation bodysuit that I’m fond of because it has a nice neckline that makes me feel like a girl, it’s super soft and kinda thick, and it’s NOT a thong. jeans from Uniqlo, and platform converse = 100% perfect for walking around all day.
wait, just kidding — but FIRST, coffee. our apt. is right above the bean (a very lively, bright and most-welcoming coffee shop), and I get a skim latte there err morning, plus I usually see at least 1 dog, 1 heroin addict and 1 inspirational fashion item in the 3 minutes I’m there. it’s FANTASTIC.
kk, we good. let’s go in our bodysuits. NYNOW. barf unfollow mostly but I did find some really cool baskets for the Bahamas – huge discs with frilly fringe. I wear a fanny pack exclusively now to gift shows – it used to be a tote bag, but I’m not trying to live that life anymore of booklets and brochures and shit I’m just going to throw away. vendors: put it online folks – promise, we are here for it. print 1 sticker, I’ll take it, and we’ll be forever friends.
woooooo, and just like that we’re done. we found our 4 things!! let’s get out of here and go do some things. Really live our life.
two very fun things I did recently – saw Jacquline Novak do stand-up at the cutest theatre in the west village. she was exceptional, and so very smart and unique and staggeringly self-aware. go see this. and a festive dinner at the iconic indochine with a slew of fronds. GET IT!! FRONDS and FRONDS!
also on the subject of eatings – two of my go-to spots. sadelle’s for a sturdy breakfast featuring rull good bagels, EXTRA LITERAL BEST scrambled eggs and caviar, good coffee and nice vibez vibez vibez. they do this le creuset teal blue and green thing, down to the server’s shoes are custom made. Are you visiting? – go here for a 100% excellent experience. and later in the day, a cocktail in the garden at the east village standard hotel. it’s v. lovely and full of dogs and beautiful people. currently there’s a snake hedge, and a big pair of lips growing in the garden. eat the fava dip and order some cheeses. pet a pup, enjoy yourself.
it’s nice to have some people here in nyc I can count on, and even better when some of my nc crew can come and visit. This stay included dinner with travis (decorator olsen’s equally-best half) at frank, Anna took her first trip since babe and did not fail turn up, and Asher, who bought these subtle glasses maybe in barney’s but also maybe on the corner of canal st., seen at breakfast, at frank (I go there a lot. it’s good)
let’s talk wants and needs. I want this chandelier from John Derian. I want to hang it over my bed at the apartment. I want to look at it when I wake up and think, wow. what a gorgeous thing to look at. I am happy to be alive to have the opportunity to look at such beautiful things. I think I’ll instagram it.
I also want a very tall paper foxglove plant. I want it to live also in the apartment because we can’t have plants because of = plant death, so faux is it. I needed plates to eat carry-out from dokodemo on, so I went to pearl river and sparked joy picking out a few dishes.
and lastly, can I just say what a pleasurable challenge it is to figure out how to decorate a New York rental studio on less than 1 dime, being here only every so often, and also having a partner who has opinions about just about every item in his life (as he should). it’s thrilling. I made a petite bar above the petite fridge, and in an effort to fill the overwhelmingly empty wall of built-ins, I made a little bag installation. I AM LITERALLY A DOMINO MAGAZINE ARTICLE. except I’d be a 25 year old painter with a pet rabbit and my grandmother’s Cartier watch.
